The George Mason women's soccer team played its home opener on Sunday afternoon and the Patriots were unable to extend their unbeaten streak to double figures as Navy scored a 1-0 overtime win over Mason. Ashlynn Soellner scored the game-winner in the 100th minute on a hot and sunny day to deny Mason head coach Diane Drake her 100th career victory.
The Midshipmen (2-1-1) used a corner kick by Katelyn George to serve the ball into the far side of the box and Soellner got her head on the ball to give Navy the victory. It was Soellner's second goal of the season and the first goal allowed by Mason (1-1-0) in more than 375 minutes, dating back to last season.
Both teams had numerous scoring chances throughout regulation but were unable to capitalize. Alyssa Andersen, Tiana Kallenberger and Omolyn Davis all put shots on goal in the first 21 minutes only to see Alexes Lopez-Shaw stop them short of the net. A George corner kick that found the foot of Hannah Morse nearly went in but Alex Bodenschatz made the stop in net for the Patriots.
In the 48th minute, Amanda Serfass hit the crossbar and Mason cleared the rebound to keep the game scoreless. The Midshipmen again just missed in the 62nd minute when Morgan Tilley hit the crossbar, with the ball deflecting out of bounds.
Mason had similar scoring opportunities, first in the 76th minute, when Capricia Alston's shot was stopped by Hannah Legler, who came into net for Navy at the half, then in the 77th minute, when Davis hit the left post, and finally in the 81st minute, when Davis got a shot off from deep on the right wing with Legler out of position, but defender Kelsey Learned stepped up to block the ball and keep the game at 0-0.
Mason outshot Navy 17-8 and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Patriots gave up six corner kicks while attempting just five. The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday when they play at Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. Navy beat Mount St. Mary's 1-0 on Friday night in Annapolis.
