FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Noelle Fanella served six aces and the George Mason women's volleyball team powered past Georgetown in straight sets Saturday afternoon at the RAC, with set scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-13. In the final match of the day, the host Patriots fell to George Washington, 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-16).

In the first of their two games Saturday as part of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge, the Patriots (1-1) opened their home schedule with a strong performance, out-hitting the Hoyas (0-2) by a .210-to-.048 margin.
Fanella also tied a match-high with eight kills, while classmate Kelsey Bohman slammed eight total blocks (three solo) to go with five kills.GU's Lindsay Wise matched Fanella's eight kills to pace the Hoyas.
The Patriots jumped out to the early lead, leading by as many as eight at 14-6. The Hoyas cut the gap to as close as four at 15-11, but the Patriots held on to take the early one-set advantage.
Georgetown found a hot start to the second set, answering a 1-0 deficit with five straight points. Mason responded, climbing back to gain the lead at 7-5. After two Hoya points tied the match, the Patriots rattled off six straight points to make it 13-7. That would be the largest lead of the set for Mason, but GU could not regain the lead.
With another 5-1 run to begin the third set for the Hoyas, the Patriots responded once again in full force. Mason fired off an 11-1 run to gain control. GU responded to make it 12-9, but eight unanswered points pushed the Patriot lead to double digits. Georgetown could get no closer than nine points as Mason tallied its first win of the season.

Mason (1-2) was led by 10 kills by Goode in the loss to the Colonials (2-1), who shared the tournament crown with American. Senior Fernanda Bartels had a double-double with 17 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Danielle Cook led the Mason blockers with five.
Lauren Whyte had 16 kills and 11 digs to lead the GW offense.
A back-and-forth match in set one to begin, GW's 5-1 run gave the Colonials a 19-15 lead. Mason came back to tie the score at 22 and earned the initial set point, leading 24-23. GW prevented the win and on its third attempt, converted a set point.
Mason opened strong in the second, scoring eight of the first 10 points. The Colonials fought their way back in, eventually using a 8-1 run to recapture the lead at 15-11. The teams would knot the scoreboard four times thereafter before five straight GW points broke a 20-20 deadlock and gave the Colonials a two-set lead heading into the locker room.
Another 6-2 run by the Patriots began the third set, but again the Colonials were able to respond. The score was tied four times in the set before a 9-1 GW run essentially put the match out of reach at 21-14. Mason added two more points to its total before the match ended.
Mason will be back in action at home next weekend, hosting the Patriot Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Patriots will face off against Army, West Virginia and Charlotte to round out the four-team field.
