MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico - Rising senior Angelee LaTouche of the George Mason women's basketball team helped the Jamaican National Team earn a silver medal at the Centrobasket Championship for Women, held on July 10-14 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. With the second-place finish at the tournament, Jamaica earned a spot in the 2011 FIBA-Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic) and the 2011 Pan-American Games.
Jamaica posted a 4-1 record in five games at the tournament, with the only loss coming in the championship game against Puerto Rico by a final score of 72-48. Jamaica defeated the Virgin Islands 73-62 to open the tournament, and advanced to the championship game with wins over Mexico (78-73), the Dominican Republic (79-76) and Trinidad and Tobago (62-59).
In five games, LaTouche scored 17 points while shooting 45.5 percent from the field. The Kingston, Jamaica native grabbed 19 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
LaTouche was joined on the team by George Mason women's basketball assistant coach Simone Edwards. Edwards, a former WNBA standout with the Seattle Storm, ranked among the tournament leaders in points, rebounds and blocked shots. Edwards led all players with an average of 11.2 rebounds per game. She finished sixth in points per game with an average of 17.0 and fourth in blocked shots with an average of 1.4 per game.
The Jamaican National Team is currently competing in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games for Women, scheduled for July 18-23 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Jamaica opened the tournament with a 63-56 win over Guatemala on Sunday.
