FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's basketball team will host five home games and face a strong group of opponents away from Fairfax including a trip to the ESPN-hosted Charleston Classic, as head coach Jim Larranaga and the Patriots released their 2010-11 non-conference schedule.
"This season's non-conference schedule will prove to be a quality test for our team as we prepare for conference play," said Larranaga. "Participating in the ESPN Charleston Classic among a field of top teams, including Georgetown and NC State, is very exciting. We will face other challenging opponents including three Atlantic 10 teams plus five home games at the Patriot Center. Along with our trip to Italy in August, we will have a great opportunity to get this team ready to compete for a CAA championship."
Following an exhibition game on Wednesday, November 3 against Bowie State, Mason officially opens its 14th season under Larranaga with a home contest against Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 13. Less than a week later, the Patriots will travel to South Carolina to take part in the Charleston Classic.
The tournament will feature three games on Nov. 18, 19, and 21 against a field which includes Charlotte, East Carolina, Georgetown, N.C. State and Wofford. Two other teams will be added to the tournament, which will be contested at the Carolina First Arena in downtown Charleston concluding with the championship match Nov. 21 on ESPN2.
After the tournament, the Patriots open a four-game homestand beginning with a Wednesday, Nov. 24 game against Radford at Patriot Center. Three days later, Mason will welcome Florida Atlantic to Fairfax. Following the Saturday game against the Owls, the Patriots will face George Washington on Wednesday, December 1.
Mason opens Colonial Athletic Association with a game on Saturday, Dec. 4, with the opponent and time yet to be determined. The Patriots will return to non-conference action and play one more home game, a Wednesday, Dec. 8 tilt against Loyola (Md.) before opening a three-game road stretch.
On Saturday, Dec. 11, the Patriots will take on Liberty in Lynchburg, Va., their final contest before breaking 11 days for final exams. Mason will return to action with a trip on Wednesday, Dec. 22 to Pittsburgh to take on Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne. One week later, the Patriots visit defending NIT champion Dayton on Dec. 29.
As the calendar year shifts into 2011, the Patriots will devote the majority of their schedule to CAA play, with one final non-conference road game on Saturday, February 19 as part of the ESPN BracketBuster event.
With the conference schedule due to be announced in the upcoming months, Mason already knows their opponents and the game sites. The Patriots will play home-and-home series against Delaware, Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion. Mason host CAA foes Drexel and Towson for a single game each at the Patriot Center in 2010-11, with road trips to VCU and William & Mary.
