GREENSBORO, N.C. - The George Mason track and field team put together a strong showing on day one of the NCAA Preliminary Round East Regional, advancing six athletes to the next round of their respective competitions at Irwin Belk Stadium.
Junior Anthony LaMastro highlighted the men's side with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 meter race, crossing the line in 3:48.20. Rachaunn Ruffin took 21st in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.42 seconds to advance to the quarters, while freshman David Verburg was 23rd in the 400 meter dash with a time of 46.76 seconds.
On the women's side, senior Tiara Swindell clocked a time of 53.16 seconds to advance in the 400 meter dash with a seventh-place finish. Joining Swindell in quarterfinal races from Mason are sophomore Cierra McGee, who finished in 18th position with a time of 54.04 seconds in the 400 and freshman Laura Sinclair, who just made the cut with a 24th-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 4:25.49.
The East region meet continues Friday morning at the Irwin Belk Track with the men's javelin throw at 10 a.m. The women's hammer throw, men's shot put, women's pole vault and men's high jump will also take place throughout the day.
Track events get started with the men's 110 meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m. and wrap up with the running of the men's and women's 3,000 meter steeplechase at 8:30 and 9:10 p.m.
