The George Mason track and field team is set to compete in the 2010 NCAA Preliminary Round East Regional. 17 entries from the Green and Gold will take part in the three-day championship meet which begins Thursday at Irwin Belk Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

On the men's side, the Patriots will be represented in nine different events, including three entries in the 400-meter dash. David Verburg, Ja-Vell Bullard and Nick Vaughn will all compete in that event, with Verburg and Bullard ranking 17th and 18th, respectively in the event.
Two Patriot men are double qualifiers, as Rachaunn Ruffin will compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes while LaVell Handy will take part in the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump. Chris Carrington and Anthony LaMastro will compete in the 800 and 1,500-meter runs, respectively, and Dwight Webley rounds out the men's individuals with his entry into the long jump.
Webley ranks 20th in the region, while the 4x400-meter relay of George Empty, Verburg, Vaughn and Bullard (Kevin Wilson alternate) ranks 17th in the region.
For the women, two Patriots in Cierra McGee and Tiara Swindell will compete in the 400-meter dash. Swindell is 11th-seeded in the region. Joining the duo in running competition is Laura Sinclair who earned a spot in the 1,500-meter run. In field events, Mandissa Marshall and Grace Mavugara will take part in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively. Finally, the 4x400-meter relay of Latasha Rivers, McGee, Marie Fields, and Swindell (Shantel Miles alternate) earned a spot in the championships.
The top-48 individuals and top-24 relays earned a spot in the regionals. In order to advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks at Oregon's Hayward Field, a top-12 finish is required at the regional meet.
