ATLANTA - The George Mason women's basketball team closed on a 13-2 run to capture its first road victory of the season, a 47-43 Colonial Athletic Association win at Georgia State on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.
Mason improved to 10-18 and 3-14 in the CAA, earning its first 10-win season and first two-game conference winning streak since the 2005-06 season. Georgia State dropped to 5-12 in CAA play and 14-14 overall.
Junior Ashleigh Braxton drained four free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the win after classmate Brittany Poindexter's layup with 45 seconds to go broke a 41-41 deadlock. Mason was facing a 41-33 deficit but held the Panthers without a field goal for more than four minutes in the waning moments.
GSU opened on a 9-2 run as Mason connected on just one of its first nine field goal attempts while amassing seven turnovers in that span. The Panthers would lead by as many as nine points in the first half before Mason fought its way back to cut the deficit to 21-18 on a pair of free throws by junior Brittany Eley following a Panther technical foul. Haltiwanger knocked down a free throw with 48 seconds left in the half to set the halftime margin at 22-18.
Mason shot just 6-of-27 from the field in the first half (22.2 percent) but out-rebounded the Panthers, 20-16. The teams combined for 25 turnovers compared to just 14 field goals. Eley had seven points in the frame to lead Mason while Rawls scored nine to pace Georgia State.
In the second half, the Patriots kept the deficit to single digits throughout before embarking on their run, earning a victory despite 25 percent field goal shooting (6-24), compared to 40 percent from the field for GSU (10-25).
Braxton was joined in double figures by Eley who chipped in 13 points while classmate Angelee LaTouche led all players with nine rebounds. Shay Rawls and Angelique Burtts paced the Panthers with 18 and 16 points respectively.
Mason will look to close out the regular season with a three-game winning streak when it hosts James Madison at 7 p.m. at Patriot Center.
