The George Mason women's basketball team faces its final road test of the 2009-10 regular season when it travels south to face Georgia State on Sunday afternoon. Tip time from the GSU Sports Arena is set for 2 p.m.
Georgia State hosts Sunday's game with a 14-13 record and 5-11 mark in CAA play, tying the Panthers for ninth in the conference standings. GSU had lost four in a row before upending Drexel on Thursday by two, 60-58. Danyiell McKellar leads the Panther offense, averaging 18 points per game, one of three GSU players to score double figures on average.
Mason saw two players reach double-digit scoring but fell behind early and could not overcome Georgia State, falling 46-36 to the Panthers in Colonial Athletic Association action exactly one month ago at the Patriot Center when the teams last met. Mason (8-11, 1-7 CAA) was led by 11 points from junior Brittany Eley and 10 points from freshman Rahneeka Saunders, who tied a career high. Leading the way for GSU (12-7, 3-5) was Danyiell McKellar who had a game-high 21 points. The Panthers out-shot the Patriots by a 38.3-to-28.3 percent margin from the field.
The Jan. 28 win gave GSU the slight 3-to-2 all-time series edge between the two schools.
Following the Sunday game, Mason will close out its regular season on Wednesday night when it hosts James Madison at the Patriot Center for a 7 p.m. contest.
