George Mason was unable to win its third consecutive contest, losing an EIVA Tait Division men's volleyball match to Juniata College on Saturday evening at the Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center in Huntingdon, Pa. Set scores were 28-30, 30-32 and 28-30.
In the first set, the Patriots erased late deficits of two and three points to tie the score. With the score knotted at 28, the Eagles took the final two points on a kill by Zach Wanner and an attack error by Mason sophomore Andrew Dentler.
Mason had an opportunity to tie the match score in the second set but was unable to capitalize. The Patriots held set point at 29-27 after a service error by Juniata's Chris Vrooman. Trailing by two, the Eagles took the next two points on a kill by Ben Wolff and a double block of an Eric Lucas attack. The teams alternated the next two points before a kill by Evan Halteman and an attack error by Dentler gave Juniata a come-from-behind victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set, the Patriots closed the gap to a point at 29-28 after freshman Javier Perez set Dentler up for a kill. On the ensuing point, Wanner answered with a kill to give Juniata a 3-0 victory.
Dentler led Mason (3-3, 1-1 EIVA Tait) with 20 kills and 21 points. Junior Dave Reilly chipped in 10 kills on 21 swings. Perez led the team with 41 assists.
The Eagles (4-3, 1-1 EIVA Tait) hit .342 as a team in the match, with Wanner leading the way with 21 kills. Halteman (11), Vrooman (10) and Wolff (10) also reached double figures in kills. Anthony Damiano recorded a match-high 15 digs.
George Mason returns home on Friday, Feb. 19 to take on Lewis in a nonconference match at the RAC Gym. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m
