George Mason downed Saint Francis by a final score of 3-1 (30-23, 24-30, 30-26, 30-25) in its EIVA Tait Division opener on Friday evening at DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa. Three Patriots reached double-digit kill totals in the victory.
Sophomore Andrew Dentler paced the Patriots with 20 kills on 47 swings. Dentler added an ace and five total blocks for a total of 23.5 points in the match. Junior Dave Reilly, a transfer from Saint Francis, had an outstanding evening against his former team. Reilly hit a sizzling .433 in the match with 15 kills on 30 attempts. Junior Eric Lucas had 14 kills and eight digs in the win.
A stout defensive effort was led by senior Ben Nichols, who recorded six total blocks. George Mason finished with 14 team blocks in the match, while the Red Flash finished with 11 as a team. Senior libero Luke Maloney led all players with 16 digs.
Nick Rivett led Saint Francis with 15 kills in a losing effort. Jordan Varee recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs for the Red Flash.
George Mason's record improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in EIVA Tait Division matches. Saint Francis dropped to 6-4 overall and 0-2 against conference opponents.
Mason returns to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Juniata in Huntingdon, Pa.
