FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's basketball team unofficially ushered in the 2010-11 season with an 85-36 victory over Davis and Elkins in an exhibition match-up at Patriot Center Monday evening. Four Patriots reached double figures in scoring as George Mason out-rebounded the Senators 46-30.
Taleia Moton led all scorers with 16 points, while Brittany Poindexter added 14. Brittany Eley and Ashleigh Braxton rounded out the double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Amber Easter secured eight rebounds in the game, while Poindexter pulled down seven.
Shalisa Hill led Davis and Elkins with 12 points and Rachel Gostomski led on glass with four rebounds.
A 17-8 run out of the gate handed the Patriots a comfortable lead at the second media timeout. George Mason held the Senators to only a free throw until a Shalisa Hill jumper at 15:28 as the Patriots led 6-3. Strong defense coupled with efficient offense propelled the Patriots to a 32-16 lead with 6:38 remaining in the opening half. George Mason closed the first half with a 14-4 run over the final five and a half minutes.
Eley led George Mason to a 47-20 lead at the break draining nine points off the bench. Poindexter added eight points, while Moton and Braxton each contributed seven. Amber Easter helped lead the Patriots to a 23-11 rebounding edge pulling down four in the opening twenty minutes.
Momentum carried for the Patriots into the second half, with an 8-4 run for a 55-24 advantage. An 18-4 run over six minutes sparked by an Angelee LaTouche jumper put the Patriots in control 85-35 at the final media timeout of the contest.
George Mason officially opens the season with a three-game road trip beginning at Massachusetts Friday, November 12 at 5 p.m.
