The George Mason men's soccer team got a dramatic 90th-minute goal on Saturday night to force overtime against UNC Wilmington but the Seahawks were able to come through with the game winner in the second overtime as the Patriots saw their regular season come to a close, losing to the Seahawks 2-1. With the defeat, Mason saw its hopes of competing in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament extinguished.
After a scoreless first half with few chances for either team, UNC Wilmington broke through on a counter in the 53rd minute. A long ball was played to Shawn Guderian who used his body to bring the ball down, then passed the ball to the right wing and a streaking Etienne Boulanger. Boulanger took a touch then powered the ball home for the match's first goal.
Mason's nearly tied the score in the 77th minute when, off an Ernesto Marquez corner kick, Ryan Gracia turned and shot at the right corner from 10 yards out. A Seahawk defender was there to head the ball out and keep it a 1-0 game. Desperation set in until the Patriots earned a corner kick in the 90th minute. While it didn't net a score, it did produce a throw-in opportunity. Hugh Roberts took a long throw-in, found Parker Walton and the senior netted his second goal of the season with just 33 seconds to play.
The match nearly ended in the 99th minute when, off a Mason corner, an unmarked Brent Brockman blasted a ball from 25 yards low and to the left but again a UNCW defender, this time Allen Lomax made a team save to force the second overtime. In the 102nd minute, Tyler Clare got behind the Mason defense and, from the right wing, beat Sean Cote and gave the Seahawks (8-6-4, 4-3-4) a season-ending win.
The Patriots (8-7-2, 4-5-2 CAA) said goodbye to nine seniors on Saturday as Fro Adu, Brent Brockman, Mike Foss, Victor Freeman, Anthony Han, Ernesto Marquez, Eber Martinez, Steven Wagoner and Parker Walton. That class was part of a CAA championship squad, went to the NCAA Tournament, beat the No. 2 team in the nation and earned a top-20 ranking for the Patriots.
