Boston. Mass. -
The George Mason women's soccer team picked up a critical Colonial Athletic Association win on Friday evening as they began their most important road trip of the season as Mason traveled to Boston and rallied from a one-goal deficit to beat Northeastern, 3-1. The Patriots entered the match tied for second in the CAA standings with the Huskies just a half-game back.
Mason (8-4-1, 4-1) fell behind in the 16th minute when Erin McGaffigan took a corner kick and found Tinna Nielsen in the box. She one-timed the ball and put the Huskies (7-4-1, 2-2-1) ahead, 1-0. The lead lasted fewer than four minutes as Tiana Kallenberger's shot in the 20th minute was stopped by Michelle Sopko but Mary Kate Lowry was there for the rebound and the equalizing goal.
Mason took the lead for good right before the half when in the 43rd minute, Kimmy Moss scored unassisted to make it 2-1 at the break. It stayed that way for more than 40 minutes until, in the 85th minute, Zoe Doherty found Zania Barnum and she beat Sopko 1v1 to ice the game.
"We played as a unit for a full 90 minutes," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "After a minor setback early in the game, we equalized, changed the momentum, took the wind out of their sails, and earned three points together. I am very proud of this team. This was the most athletic team we have seen in the CAA and they are very dangerous. We did a spectacular job today!"
Mason took nine shots in the match, all on goal. Northeastern took 19 shots but just 10 were on goal and Alex Bodenschatz stopped nine of those as the junior played one of her finer games of the season. Northeastern had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks but also committed 13 fouls to Mason's seven and committed seven offsides to Mason's two.
The Patriots will continue their road trip on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m .when they play at Hofstra. The Pride (11-1, 5-0) are the lone unbeaten CAA team as they are 5-0 on the season.
