The George Mason women's soccer team suffered its first Colonial Athletic Association loss of the season on Sunday afternoon in their first CAA road match of the season as the Patriots fell at James Madison, 3-0. Mason gave up a goal in the first five minutes, then two goals in the final five minutes of the first half as the Patriots fell to 7-4-1, 3-1-0 on the year. James Madison improved to 7-5-0, 3-1-0.
"It was not one of our better games," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "Our energy was good but our attacking decisions were not. We lost our focus in a one-minute stretch and gave up two goals to a team well-seasoned in preying on mistakes. We countered with a goal only to get called for an unusual offsides call."
Teresa Rynier scored in the fourth minute when she headed in Becky Sparks' throw-in from deep in Mason territory. In the 22nd minute, Mason scored what looked to be the equalizer as Omolyn Davis connected off a free kick with Tiana Kallenberger. However, the offsides flag went up and the goal was nullified. The score stayed 1-0 unti lthe 42nd minute when Rynier passed the ball from the middle to the right side of the box and Ariana Ruela scored on a slow roller to the near post.
Less than a minute later, the Dukes put the nail in Mason's coffin as Rynier sent a through ball to Lauren Wilson who dribble into the box and went far post to make it 3-0. Diane Wszalek made seven saves while Alex Bodenschatz stopped six shots and Lyndse Hokanson stopped one. The Dukes had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Patriots return to action on Friday when they play at Northeastern at 6 p.m. "We will regroup and work hard this week in preparation for a very challenging weekend on the road," Drake said.
