Towson, Md. -
The George Mason women's soccer team took a 2-0 win over Towson on Friday afternoon, thereby earning a spot in next weekend's four-team Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The Patriots will be the third seed in the tournament at face second-seeded James Madison in the semifinals on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Omolyn Davis scored a pair of goals for Mason, the first, late in the first half, on an assist from Mary Kate Lowry, the second, early in the second half, on an assist from Kelly Thomas.
Mason will be playing in the CAA Tournament, which will be contested at Hofstra, for the first time since 2007, when the Patriots fell to James Madison in the opening round.
Mason (11-7-1, 7-4-0 CAA) could have advanced to the CAA Tournament with a tie but they never thought twice about attacking against a Towson team that knew it was playing its final match of the season. The Tigers (6-11-3, 2-8-1 CAA) had several good chances in each half but Alex Bodenschatz was there to stop the shots on goal. Bodenschatz finished with four saves while Jocelyn Papciak stopped five of seven shots on goal. Mason had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks in the match, just the second time this year that's happened.
The fourth seed in the tournament will be Georgia State. The Panthers played the Seahawks on Saturday with a spot in the CAA Tournament on the line. Georgia State won that contest 1-0 with a goal in the 80th minute. Mason fell to Hofstra earlier this year, 5-0, and lost to James Madison, 3-0. Both those matches were on the road. The Patriots beat Georgia State, 2-0, in Fairfax.
