George Mason redshirt senior Ernesto Marquez had a hand in all six of Mason's goals last week and on Monday afternoon, the Colonial Athletic Association recognized him for his performance as he was named CAA Player of the Week and the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week. Marquez scored two goals and had four assists as Mason beat Towson, 3-2 and James Madison 3-0.
Against Towson, a team Mason hadn't beaten since 2004, Marquez scored the equalizer to make it a 1-1 game, then found Mike Foss for a go-ahead score and then passed the ball to Hugh Roberts for an insurance goal that turned out to be critical in the 3-2 win. Towson entered the week 31st in the RPI. Against James Madison, Marquez set up Ryan Gracia for the game-winner, added an insurance goal just before the half and found Victor Freeman as Mason beat the Dukes, who entered the week 37th in the RPI.
Marquez' eight points on the week are more than any Mason player has this season and he leads the team with five goals and five assists. He is fourth in the CAA in points per game, third in assists per game and fifth in goals per game. He is the first men's soccer player to win the CAA Player of the Week award since Sean Kelley on Oct. 5, 2009. It's the first weekly award for Marquez who was named Third-Team All-CAA last year.
