Women's Volleyball Defeats Cornell, 3-1

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's volleyball team bounced back from a deficit for the second time in as many days, winning the final three sets in a 3-1 victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon at the RAC Gym. Set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.

Sophomore Noelle Fanella slammed a match-high15 kills on .297 hitting to lead the Mason offense, and was joined in double figures by freshman Ran Yin who chipped in 10 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Bohman dominated at the net, registering 11 total blocks, tying a record for the third highest total in school history, while freshman Danielle Cook added seven block assists. Juliana Rodgers had nine kills to lead the Big Red.

Mason trailed by as many as eight in the first set before pulling within two at 22-20. Three of the next four points went to the Big Red though as they won the first set. In the second, a close battle which neither squad led by more than three points, Mason took its final lead on a kill by junior Fernanda Bartels to make it 21-20. Mason never trailed after the second point of the third set, out-hitting Cornell .355-to-.061 in the stanza.

The fourth set was more of the same, with the Patriots holding a .286-to-.075 hitting advantage. After dropping the first point of the set, once again Mason never trailed, scoring six in a row and leading by as many eight, including the final margin.

Cornell plays in their final match of the tournament at 4:30 p.m. against Kent State, while the Patriots close out the event with a 7 p.m. match against Morehead State.
