Richmond, Va. -
The George Mason women's soccer team found itself embroiled in a physical contest on Sunday afternoon at VCU and while the Rams were whistled for more fouls than the Patriots, Mason's fouls proved more costly, as the Patriots surrendered a pair of penalty kicks, the second on coming in overtime on a red card as the Rams downed the Patriots, 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association action.
"It was one of the most disappointing and emotionally charged games of the year," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "There were five yellow cards, one red card, two penalty kicks and we left on the wrong side of a heartbreaker. We will continue to work hard to find our first conference result. We need to be more composed in the heat of emotion."
Mason scored in the third minute as Tiana Kallenberger's shot hit the crossbar and Mary Kate Lowry was there to collect the rebound and score to put Mason ahead 1-0. The score remained that way until the 56th minute when Amanda Adams lined up for her first penalty kick of the game, beating Mason goal keeper Katie Frey. From there the two teams played scoreless until the 99th minute, when Lowry was whistled for a red card in the box and Adams scored again on a penalty kick for the game winner.
Mason (8-3, 0-2) has now lost back-to-back one-goal games. VCU (5-4-1, 1-1), rebounded from a loss last week at Towson. The teams combined for 29 fouls with VCU being called for 16. The Rams also had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Mason will return to the pitch on Friday when they host Hofstra at George Mason Stadium at 7 p.m.
