Men's Soccer Hosts Defending National Champion Maryland on Tuesday

    FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason will host the defending national champion Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. at George Mason Stadium. The highly-anticipated men's soccer matchup is a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round contest that resulted in a 2-0 win for the Terrapins.

    Tickets to Tuesday's match cost $5 for adults and $2 for youth, senior citizens and George Mason faculty and staff with a valid ID. George Mason University students will be admitted free with a valid student ID. Tickets will be available for purchase at the entrance to George Mason Stadium. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. Fans can also purchase tickets online as part of a Men's Soccer Twin Pack through Ticketmaster.

    Tuesday's match is the Broadside Game of the Week, as well as the third annual Wingstock celebration. All George Mason University students in attendance will receive free chicken wings courtesy of Hard Times Cafe while supplies last, with the first 400 students to enter the gate receiving a free Wingstock t-shirt. The festivities will also include a halftime chicken wing eating contest. George Mason University's mascot The Patriot will make an appearance at the interactive kids zone featuring an inflatable soccer shot and players from D.C. United will be on hand with prizes and giveaways.

    Maryland is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the latest NSCAA/adidas National Poll released on Sept. 22 with a 5-1-1 overall record. The Terrapins are the top-ranked team in the South Atlantic Region according to the NSCAA, while the Patriots are ranked eighth in the region. The Patriots, ranked 19th in the nation to start the season by Soccer America, are currently 5-2-0 after winning Saturday's conference opener against VCU by a final score of 1-0 in Richmond, Va.

    Tuesday's contest is a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round match held at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. on Nov. 25, 2008. After defeating Penn in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament, Mason was unable to advance past the second round, taking a 2-0 loss to drop to 5-8-1 against Maryland in the all-time series between the two schools. The last time the Patriots beat the Terrapins was during the 2001 season, when Mason took a 1-0 win on the road.

    George Mason has posted three consecutive shutouts, outscoring Richmond, Longwood and VCU 7-0 in the process. The Patriots have outscored opponents 12-4 through seven contests. Sophomore Ryan Gracia, junior Parker Walton, sophomore Draymond Washington and sophomore Eric Zuehsow are all tied for the team lead with two goals scored. Washington leads the team in points with six. Senior Sean Kelley has started every match in goal with three shutouts, 28 saves and a miniscule 0.58 GAA.

    The Terps have outscored opponents 14-4 and outshot opponents 137-53 through seven matches. Junior forward Jason Herrick leads the offensive attack with four goals and nine points. Sophomore Casey Townsend has three goals and sophomore Matt Kassel has five assists. Sophomore Zac MacMath has played 476 minutes in goal with 15 saves and two shutouts. Maryland defeated No. 2 North Carolina 1-0 in its last match on Friday.
