Williamsburg, Va. -
The George Mason women's soccer team has played just six games so far in 2009 but already the Patriots have matched their 2008 win total as Mason improved to 5-1 after taking an 8-1 win over Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Williamsburg. The victory coupled with Friday's 3-1 win over UCSB gave Mason the Tribe Invitational title.
"It was a fantastic effort driven by our senior leadership," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "The players fought until the end of the match and earned a well-deserved result" We are attacking with numbers and the desire as well as the belief we will score every chance we get."
Mason wasted no time in getting a lead and they built to it throughout the first half. After several early corner kicks failed to net a goal, the Patriots finally took a 1-0 lead on a breakaway in the 16th minute. Freshman Tiana Kallenberger found redshirt junior Omolyn Davis with the match's opening goal. Davis has scored in all five of Mason's wins and she did not play in Mason's lone loss due to injury.
Kallenberger scored herself just 11 minutes later when, in the 27th minute, Theresa DeLucca found her to make it a 2-0 game. The score ran to 3-0 in the 36th minute when Capricia Alston finished a corner kick from Kelly Keelan. Mason has scored in every match this season and it has put at least three on the board in each of its wins.
The Patriots kept the scoring going in the second half when in the 57th minute, Annie Lebherz slipped through the right side, took a pass from Hannah Sklar and finished to the left of Coastal Carolina keeper Karen Pavlick. The Chanticleers got their lone goal in the 66th minute when Morgan Thomas took a pass from Cami Skladany on the right side and finished past Mason goalie Melissa Mailley.
In the 74th minute, the Patriots began a scoring outburst that saw three scores in fewer than five minutes. First Keelan found Kallenberger behind the defense to make it 5-1. Then Keelan scored unassisted on a blast from 25 yards out to make it a five-goal lead. Finally, Davis recorded her first multi-goal game when she scored on a free kick from 20 yards out to make it 7-1. The Patriots capped the scoring when Kimmy Moss scored off an assist from Davis in the 85th minute.
Mason outshot Coastal Carolina 26-2 with more than half of Mason's shots on goal. The Patriots had seven corners to Coastal's five while Mason committed five offsides to Coastal's one.
Mason will return to the pitch on Friday when the Patriots host Long Island in the Mason Invitational. William & Mary and Cornell will also take part in the tournament which has two games on Friday and two on Sunday.
