COLUMBIA, S.C. -
George Mason bounced back from a loss in its last match to take a 2-0 victory over Presbyterian College on Friday evening in the opening match of the adidas Gamecock Classic at Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C. The Patriots improve to 2-1 on the season with the win.
Mason got on the board early when freshman Derek Markheim scored the first goal of his collegiate career 9:10 into the contest. Sophomore Draymond Washington was credited with an assist on the goal.
After Markheim's tally, 54 minutes ticked off the clock without another score. In the 64th minute, junior Parker Walton broke the scoring drought when he netted his second goal of the season. Walton also scored the game-winning goal in the Patriots' season-opening win against Howard at the D.C. College Cup last weekend.
Senior Sean Kelley played all 90 minutes in goal for the Patriots, making a total of three saves. It was the 26th shutout of Kelley's career. He was opposed by James Neal, who played 90 minutes in goal with four saves for the Blue Hose, who dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Mason wraps up the tournament with a match against host South Carolina on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
