The George Mason women's soccer is 3-0 for the first time since 1993 and the Patriots remain unscored upon this season as Mason beat Howard, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Mason has outscored the opposition 13-0 this season.
Mason took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, benefiting from a Howard own goal. Kimmy Moss crossed in the box toward a pair of Mason attackers but a Howard defender put the ball in the Bison net while trying to clear it. The Patriots quickly added to the scoreboard without any help when, in the 19th minute, Kelly Keelan took the ball on the left side from Theresa DeLucca and blasted the ball into the far right corner of the net. It was her second goal of the year.
Later, in the 33rd minute, Omolyn Davis added her third score of the year. Keelan dribbled in on the left side, drew a trio of defenders and left the ball for a wide-open Davis in front. The scored stayed 3-0 at the half.
Mason's depth finally extracted a price in the second half. Howard had just two players enter the game while Mason used 12 players off the bench. In the 75th minute, Zania Barnum took the ball at midfield and served a beautiful pass to Tiana Kallenberger, who made one move past the goalie and served the ball on an open net to make it 4-0.
"Howard's a much-improved team that works very hard and is very scrappy," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "I Thought we lost our edge in the second half and held the ball too long. It's the sign of a quality team, though, that we were able to play less than our best and still win."
Melissa Mailley stopped all four shots she faced to earn the win while she and Alex Bodenschatz combined on the shutout. The Patriots will return to action on Friday night when they play at Penn at 7:30 p.m.
