The George Mason women's soccer team opened the 2009 season on Friday afternoon with a convincing 3-0 win at VMI. The Patriots got goals from three different players while limiting the Keydets to just two shots on goal.

Junior Kimmy Moss had a goal and an assist, juniors Omolyn Davis and Capricia Alston had goals and sophomore Alyssa Andersen and freshman Tiana Kallenberger also handed out assists as Mason outshot VMI, 22-8. Freshman Katie Frey earned the win in her first collegiate game, stopping both shots on goal.

"We have some team defending kinks to work out, but our attacking options and style were very dynamic," said Mason head coach Diane Drake.

Mason scored in the 18th minute when Moss sent a corner kick in front of the net that Davis directed in off a VMI defender. It didn't take long for Mason to push the score to 2-0 when Moss scored in front of the net on a one-timer off an assist from Anderson who served the ball from the left flank. The score stayed 2-0 until the 76th minute when Alston took the ball from Kallenbeger and blasted the ball in the net from 10 yards out.

Frey played the first 67-plus minutes in net before giving way to Melissa Mailley, who played for 16 minutes. Alex Bodenschatz played the final six-plus minutes to complete the team shutout.

Mason will have a week off before retaking the pitch as the Patriots host a pair of non-conference opponents next weekend. The Patriots will host Mount St. Mary's on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. and then Howard on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
