Pachella Places First at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational

  • New Balance Collegiate Invitational Complete Results

    NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Michael Pachella topped the field in the 1000-meter run championship this weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y. Pachella was one of three Patriot runners to finish in the top-10 in the event.

    Pachella won the event with a time of 2:24.65, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the runner-up, Logan Gonzales of Texas, who crossed the finish line in 2:26.15. A pair of Patriot juniors, Sam Horn and Anthony LaMastro, finished fifth and sixth in the race, respectively. Horn clocked in at 2:27.17, while LaMastro finished the race in 2:27.39. Pachella, Horn and LaMastro all topped the IC4A-qualifying standard with their times.

    In the 60-meter dash, freshman Rachaunn Ruffin qualified for the IC4A Championships with a time of 6.95 seconds. Ruffin finished in 35th place in the event.

    Another member of the freshman class, Ja-Vell Bullard of Hampton, Va., qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 400-meter dash championship. Bullard finished third in his heat with a time of 48.03 seconds, narrowly missing qualifying for the finals of the event. The top-10 competitors in the event all qualified for the finals. Bullard's time ranked 11th among the field of 146 athletes.

    Senior Mutsa Nyakabau finished 13th in the 500-meter dash championship with a time of 1:04.82. The time qualified the Harare, Zimbabwe native for the IC4A Championships in the event.

    In the field events, sophomore Dwight Webley finished in fifth place in the long jump championship and 19th in the triple jump championship with a pair of IC4A-qualifying jumps. In the long jump, Webley recorded a leap of 7.50 meters (24 ft. 7.25 in.) and in the triple jump Webley jumped 14.86 meters (48 ft. 9 in.).

    In the relays, Mason topped the IC4A-qualifying standard in both the 4x400-meter relay championship and the 4x800-meter relay championship. The Patriots placed second to Columbia in the 4x400-meter relay field with a time of 7:33.63.

    On the women's side, junior Tiara Swindell finished second in her heat in the 400-meter dash championship with an ECAC-qualifying time of 55.88 seconds. The time ranked Swindell 28th in the field of 132 competitors.

    Three members of Mason's women's team topped the ECAC-qualifying standard in the triple jump. Freshman Grace Mavugara finished 12th in the triple jump championship with a leap of 12.41 meters (40 ft. 8.75 in.). Teammate Ryann Hendricks' mark of 12.20 meters (40 ft. 0.5 in.) placed her 15th in the field. In the triple jump college event, sophomore Chia Hudson finished in 17th place with a jump of 11.75 meters (38 ft. 6.75 in.).

    In the 4x400-meter relay, Mason finished 12th with an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:50.67. BYU's team won the relay race with a time of 3:41.20.

    The George Mason track and field program will split its competition schedule next weekend, competing at the Valentines' Invitational in Boston, Mass. and the ISU Classic in Ames, Iowa.
