FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore Brittany Poindexter notched her 10th double-figure scoring outing of the season with a team-high 13 points, but a sharp-shooting Drexel squad downed the George Mason women's basketball team, 71-52, in Colonial Athletic Association action on Thursday evening at Patriot Center.
Drexel improved to 13-8 and maintained a share of first place in the conference standings with an 8-2 CAA record, while the Patriots (2-19, 0-10) were denied their first conference win of the season.
Poindexter's 13 points paced the Patriot offense, which was out-shot by a 53.3-to-40 percent margin from the field. Drexel saw four scorers reach double figures, led by 21 points from Gabriela Marginean, who entered the game ranked fifth in the nation in scoring. Nicole Hester had a double-double for the Dragons with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Rachel Robinson led Mason with a career-high eight boards.
The game was closely contested in the early moments, as the Dragons led 8-6 headed into the first scheduled timeout. An 8-2 run, though, put the Dragons ahead and Mason could get no closer than four in the opening period. DU mounted an 8-2 run over the final minutes of the half to lead by 12, before a Hobbs trey with 46 seconds left set the halftime margin at 34-25.
Mason held the Dragons to 43.5 percent shooting in the first half, but Drexel opened the second stanza with a 12-2 run and shot 63.6 percent from the field (14-22) in the half to control the scoreboard until the end.
The Patriots will look to record a victory Sunday when they host Georgia State on Pack The House Day. The opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Patriot Center.
