Dec. 21, 2009
Junior opposite hitter/middle blocker Holly Goode and head coach Pat Kendrick added a pair of footnotes to one of the most successful seasons in recent George Mason women's volleyball history, as they received the State Player and Coach of the Year Awards, as selected by a vote of Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
It marks the 10th time that a Patriot has been named the top player in the Commonwealth, while Kendrick earned the award for the sixth time. Additionally, sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Bohman was selected to the VaSID All-State First Team.
Goode, who last week was recognized as an AVCA All-East Region selection, earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year honors after she finished third in the conference with 403.5 points, an average of 3.70 including 3.17 kills per set. Goode was also selected the Most Outstanding Performer of the CAA Championship after posting back-to-back 20-kill performances in leading the Patriots to their eighth conference title and first since 2003. For her efforts during the tournament, she was named one of Collegiate Volleyball Update's Top Performers on Dec. 1. The Virginia Beach, Va., native was a two-time CAA Player of the Week and was named to three All-Tournament Teams in 2009.
Kendrick put the finishing touches on her 25th season at the helm of Patriot women's volleyball with the program's eighth CAA title, and also received the conference's Coach of the Year award for the ninth time. She guided the Patriots to a 23-9 record, a 14-win improvement over the 2008 campaign, and saw four players receive All-CAA honors.
Bohman, an AVCA All-Region honorable mention, ranked 16th nationally in blocks per set (1.38) with a conference-best 168 total blocks as she earned All-CAA First Team plaudits. She also contributed 225 kills and was fourth in the CAA with a .293 hitting percentage. Bohman was selected to the CAA All-Tournament Team, named the best hitter of the Patriot Invitational, and was recognized as the CAA's Defensive Player of the Week twice. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was also recognized as one of CVU.com's Top Performers on Nov. 3.
