George Mason senior midfielder Richard Edgar earned his second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for men's soccer, the conference office announced on Thursday morning. Edgar, who is working toward his bachelor's degree in psychology, has an outstanding GPA of 3.97
The conference honors a Scholar-Athlete in each of its 23 sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The winners were selected by a vote of the sports information directors at each CAA institution.
Edgar, an NSCAA/adidas College Scholar All-East Region Team member in 2008, was recently named a First-Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine. He made the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Senior All-America First-Team in 2009 for his excellence in the classroom, outstanding character, and community service work in addition to competition on the field. Edgar is a Dean's List student and a George Mason Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He is also a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award.
On the field, Edgar was selected to the All-CAA second team for the second consecutive season after contributing two assists and two points for a Patriots' squad that posted a 10-7-1 record in 2009. He earned the first NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection of his career for his stellar play throughout the 2009 season. Edgar was also a Third-Team All-CAA pick in 2007 and made the league's All-Rookie team in 2006. A team captain since his sophomore season, he has been a starter in every match during his career at Mason. Edgar played an instrumental role in helping the Patriots capture the 2008 CAA Championship.
