George Mason freshman Luke Hancock has played like anything but a freshman in Mason's first five games and after winning CAA men's basketball Rookie of the Week last Monday, he repeated the honor this week, sharing the award with Hofstra's Halil Kanacevic.
Hancock flirted with triple-doubles throughout the week, averaging 8.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Against Villanova, in 26 minutes, he scored nine points with five rebounds and a team-high two assists. Against Georgia Tech, in 28 minutes, he scored eight points with nine rebounds and seven assists. He led the team in assists and tied for the team lead in rebounds. Against Indiana, in a team-high 32 minutes, he scored nine points with eight rebounds and a team-high eight assists.
For the season, Hancock is averaging 27.2 minutes off the bench with 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 rebounds. He leads the team in assists, is tied for second in rebounding and he's fourth in scoring. His 50 percent shooting from the field on the year is second-best on the team as well and he is tied for third in 3-pointers made.
Kanacevic averaged 8.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks for Hofstra in three games last week. Hancock and the Patriots return to action on Saturday when they play at Tulane at 3 p.m. EST. That game will be broadcast on WWRC 1260 AM.
