2009 Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team
FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior midfielder Richard Edgar, a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist, added another honor when he was named a First-Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine on Wednesday morning. Edgar is one of 12 men's soccer players in the entire nation named to the first team.
Edgar is the first Academic All-American from the men's soccer program in school history. He becomes the eighth George Mason University student-athlete to receive the honor. The last Academic All-American from George Mason was Chris Looze of the baseball team in 2005.
Edgar, a psychology major and Dean's List student with a 3.97 GPA, was an NSCAA/adidas College Scholar All-East Region Team member in 2008. The Mechanicsville, Md. native won the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award for men's soccer last season. A George Mason Scholar-Athlete Award winner as well, he is also a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award, and is on track to receive the honor once more in 2009.
On the field, Edgar wrapped up his career at George Mason with his second consecutive Second-Team All-CAA selection in 2009. He was also selected to the All-CAA Second Team in 2008 after contributing two goals and an assist for a Patriots' squad that captured their first CAA championship since 1989 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Edgar was also a Third-Team All-CAA pick in 2007 and made the conference's All-Rookie team in 2006.
A team captain since his sophomore season, he was a starter in every match during his career at Mason. Edgar contributed two assists and two points in 18 starts for a George Mason team that went 10-7-1 overall during the 2009 season.
