George Mason freshman goal keeper Katie Frey is having one of the best statistical seasons of any keeper in school history. On Monday, she added an honor to her growing list of accomplishments as she was named Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Rookie of the Week. It is the second time she's earned the honor this season.
Frey played 135 minutes in net for Mason this past week with eight saves and a shutout win. Against Drexel, she played the second half of a 3-0 win and made a pair of stops. Against Delaware, she played all 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory.
Frey has made 58 saves this year while allowing 11 goals, playing 16 games with 14 starts. She is 9-4-2 on the season with six shutouts and she's had a hand in two combined shutouts. She has stopped 84.1 percent of shots faced with a 0.72 goals-against average. The goals-against average is the second-best single-season mark in school history, trailing only Jen Mead's 0.54 mark in 1994. Her save percentage is fifth-best in school history.
Frey and the Patriots are currently seventh in the CAA with 11 points and a 3-3-2 record. This weekend, Mason will travel to Norfolk to take on William & Mary and Old Dominion, which will enter the weekend tied for fifth, with 12 points. Currently in fourth is UNC Wilmington, with 13 points. The top four teams make the CAA Tournament. Mason plays at William & Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
