Box Score
Fairfax, Va. -
A Sasha Vido penalty kick with 28 seconds to play was all the offense Mason needed on Sunday afternoon as the George Mason women's soccer team stole a 1-0 win from Delaware at George Mason Stadium. A wild final minute of action saw each team staring at nearly wide-open net from just a few yards away but it was Mason that was able to come away with the score as the patriots improved to 11-4-2 on the year, 3-3-2 in Colonial Athletic Association action. Delaware fell to 5-54, 2-3-3.
With just under a minute to play, Delaware had possession inside the Mason box. Caitlyn Germain sent a ball across and Frey made a move on a charging Blue Hen player. But the ball continued through the box to the foot of Morgan Warrington who blasted a ball to the left post. Luckily for Frey and the Patriots, Patti Benner and Kelly Thomas were there and the two seniors got their bodies on the ball to keep it out of the Mason net.
The team save immediately launched an offensive opportunity for Mason as Tiana Kallenberger had the ball unmarked in the opening field. Racing toward the Delaware goal, she touched the ball to the side as keeper Annie Bevan approached and Bevan's slide tackle drew a red card setting the stage for Vido's penalty kick. Breanna Stemler came on in relief of Bevan and she guessed left as Vido went right.
Frey and Bevan each made six saves in the contest. Mason had 18 shots to Delaware's 12 while the teams tied in fouls at 8-8. Delaware did have a big 4-1 edge in corner kicks, but none of those chances materialized into a score. Mason has now allowed just two goals in the past five matches, including a pair of overtime contests.
The Patriots will return to action on Friday when they play at William & Mary (10-6, 4-4) at 7 p.m.
