No. 23 George Mason held a 3-1 lead against James Madison on Saturday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex but was unable to hold on for the win. The Dukes tied the score in the 78th minute and the match ended in a tie after a pair of scoreless overtime periods.
Junior Victor Freeman scored his fourth goal of the season in six matches to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ryan Gracia took a shot that was saved by JMU goalkeeper Ken Manahan. The ball deflected off Manahan to Freeman, who knocked the ball into the middle of the net to put the Patriots up a goal in the 30th minute.
After Andrew Harvey tied the score at one with the Dukes' first goal of the evening in the 38th minute, junior Parker Walton put the Patriots back on top with his third goal of the season in the 40th minute. The two sides entered the locker room at the half with Mason leading 2-1.
After the intermission, the Patriots added to their lead on a goal by Ernesto Marquez in the 53rd minute. Freeman was credited with an assist on the score.
James Madison cut into the two-goal deficit with a penalty-kick goal by CJ Sapong in the 69th minute. Trailing by a goal, the Dukes tied the score at three with a goal by Paul Wyatt in the 78th minute.
The Patriots took three shots during the two extra periods but were unable to find the back of the net. Manahan made saves on two of the three scoring opportunities. Mason (7-3-1, 2-1-1 CAA) held JMU (6-2-2, 1-1-1 CAA) without a shot in overtime.
George Mason returns home for its next contest, taking on Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association match on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at George Mason Stadium. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
