A pair of junior men's track and field athletes, Anthony LaMastro and Michael Pachella, qualified for the IC4A Championships in the mile at the Patriot Games, held on Saturday afternoon at the Field House. Pachella and LaMastro finished in third and fourth place in the event, respectively.
Pachella, a native of Ogdensburg, N.J., crossed the finish line in 4:12.24. LaMastro, a native of Flanders, N.J., finished the race right behind Pachella in a time of 4:12.54. Mason freshman Everett Hackett came in fifth in the race with a time of 4:16.05.
Freshman Ja-Vell Bullard and sophomore Kevin Wilson were the top two finishers in the 500-meter dash. Bullard finished in first place with a time of 1:04.79, narrowly edging Wilson, who completed the race in 1:04.89. Both Bullard and Wilson qualified for the IC4A Championships in the event.
In the pole vault, freshman Lee Oxenford topped the field with a mark of 4.70 meters. Mount St. Mary's Rick Villanova and UMBC's Dominic Devaud finished tied for second place (4.55m) in the event.
On the women's side, Sable Otey qualified for the ECAC Championships with a second-place finish and time of 8.77 seconds in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. Otey advanced to the finals of the event with a time of 8.88 seconds in the preliminary heats. Teammate Asia Odum also advanced to the finals, finishing in third place with a time of 8.92 seconds.
Senior Ryann Hendricks and freshman Grace Mavugara finished in second and third place, respectively, in the triple jump. Hendricks jumped 12.39 meters, while Mavugara posted a mark of 12.25 meters. Hendricks and Mavugara have already qualified for the ECAC Championships in the event.
Both Tiara Swindell and Monique McKenzie finished in first place in their respective events. Swindell won the 500-meter dash (1:16.87), while McKenzie topped the field in the 800-meter run (2:16.30).
George Mason will compete again on Friday, Feb. 6 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. The two-day meet will be held at The Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y.
