NORFOLK, Va. - The George Mason women's basketball team led early, but the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs proved too much as they handed the Patriots a 73-42 defeat in Colonial Athletic Association action on Thursday evening at the Constant Center.
The Patriots (2-13, 0-4) were plagued by shooting woes in the game, as ODU (9-5, 4-0) held a 41.7-to-26.3 percent field goal shooting advantage. The Lady Monarchs controlled the paint as well, outscoring Mason 38-to-14 while also out-rebounding the Patriots, 48-to-35.
Mason was led by 10 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Brittany Poindexter, while all five ODU starters reached double figures, led by 16 points from Jasmine Parker. Tiffany Green had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
It was the second 3-pointer of Wilkins' career which gave the Patriots the early 3-0 lead, and Mason held the Lady Monarchs scoreless for 2:15 until Tiffany Green completed a three-point play to tie the score. Mason led once again as Hobbs drained a trey, but ODU took its first lead of the contest with 4:37 expired in the first half.
That developed into a 21-0 run by the Lady Monarchs, moving the advantage into double figures as Mason connected on just two of its first 17 field goal attempts, with the scoring spree ended by an Eley 3-pointer at the 8:07 mark. ODU ended the half with seven unanswered points to bring its largest lead up to that point into the locker room, with the Lady Monarchs ahead 36-17.
Mason was limited to 20.7 percent field goal shooting in the first half while Old Dominion shot 42.9 percent from the field and held a 28-to-14 rebounding advantage in the first half.
The second half was more of the same for the Patriots, who could get no closer than 19 as Old Dominion ran its winning streak over Mason to 44 games in the two schools' all-time series.
George Mason returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Northeastern at 2 p.m. The game against the Huskies will be Princess Day at Patriot Center, with the first 500 girls receiving a free tiara.
