Senior Ryann Hendricks qualified for the ECAC Championships in two events at the Father Diamond Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the George Mason Field House. Hendricks met the qualifying standard for the championship meet in both the long jump and the triple jump in the Patriots' first meet of the 2009 indoor season.
The Chicago, Ill. native topped the field of 18 competitors in today's long jump competition, finishing with a mark of 5.76 meters to top the ECAC qualifying standard of 5.65 meters. In the triple jump, Hendricks finished in second place with a jump of 12.53 meters to qualify for the ECAC Championships in that event as well. The ECAC qualifying standard in the triple jump is 11.70 meters.
Joining Hendricks at the ECAC Championships in the triple jump will be freshman Grace Mavugara, who finished in third place with a leap of 12.32 meters in her first collegiate meet. Mavugara also competed in the long jump, finishing fifth with a jump of 5.43 meters.
Sophomore Dwight Webley, the 2008 CAA Rookie of the Year, will represent the men's team in the triple jump at the IC4A Indoor Championships after topping the IC4A qualifying standard of 14.30 meters in the event at today's meet. Webley was the runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 15.09 meters.
Freshman thrower Brandon Holmberg set a new school record in the weight throw in his first collegiate meet. Holmberg recorded a toss of 12.54 meters in the event.
In the relay events, the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Marie Fields, Hendricks, Crystal Lawrence and Tiara Swindell qualified for the ECAC Championships with a second-place finish in the event. The team narrowly missed taking first place, finishing behind Howard University's team with a time of 3:51.58. On the men's side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Kevin Wilson, Webley, Marcus Wyche and Ja-Vell Bullard topped the field with a time of 3:20.29. Also finishing first was the men's 4x800-meter relay team of Anthony LaMastro, Tom Troxell, Matt Bailey and John Crain that nearly qualified for the IC4A Championships with a time of 7:56.57.
George Mason will compete again next weekend at the VT Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. The meet will begin on Friday, Jan. 16 and conclude the following day.
