The George Mason men's soccer team extended its winning streak to four matches with a 2-1 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in the CAA opener for both teams on Saturday evening at George Mason Stadium. With the win, the Patriots improve to 5-2-1 on the season. The Rams fall to 4-4-0 after taking the loss.
Anthony Han, a sophomore transfer from St. John's who has started the past four matches at midfield, scored the game-winning goal in the 67th minute off an assist from freshman Draymond Washington. Han's crucial score was the first of his career at George Mason.
Han's goal capped a flurry of scoring for both sides. In a span of two minutes in the second half, all three goals were scored. Senior forward Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe came off the bench to put the Patriots on the board first in the 65th minute, taking a Rams' defender one-on-one on the left side, before angling a shot past VCU goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra and into the right side of the net.
Virginia Commonwealth tied the score at the 67:08 mark of the match when senior midfielder Gerson Dos Santos set up junior midfielder Owusu Sekyere for his first goal of the season. Han answered a mere 18 seconds later to give Mason a one-goal lead that it would never relinquish.
The stats were equal on both sides, as both teams finished with 12 shots and five corner kicks. Both goalkeepers played all 90 minutes in the match. Junior Sean Kelley finished with four saves for Mason, while Dykstra recorded a pair of stops for VCU.
George Mason continues its conference schedule next Saturday with a match against the William and Mary Tribe at 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
