NEW MARKET, Va. - The George Mason men's and women's cross country teams traveled to the New Market Battlefield to compete this morning in the James Madison Invitational. The men's team ran to a second place finish, while the women's team captured third.
Highlighting the women's side for Mason was Samantha Fickel. The sophomore crossed the finished line in the 5,000 meter race in a time of 22:03.20, good enough for a 12th place finish. Freshman Karlyn Lockie followed Fickel about 30 seconds later finishing 17th overall. Fellow freshman Monique McKenzie earned a 25th place finish. Also competing for Mason were Elizabeth Smith and Katherine Griffith who finished in 33rd and 44th respectively.
Alison Paris from James Madison won the women's race in a course record 19:36.20. James Madison won the race with Mary Washington finishing second.
On the men's side, two Patriots finished in the top ten in the 8,000 meter race. Scott Tekesky finished eighth overall with a time of 25:47.10 and Everett Hackett finished 10th just five seconds later. Anthony LaMastro was not far behind as he came in 13th with a time of 26:40.50. Right behind LaMastro were Matt Bailey and Bobby Krause in 14th and 15th respectively. Mason had three other runners all finish 21st or better.
Georgetown's Levi Miller won the men's race in a course-record 24:43.60. Georgetown as a team finished first in the meet edging out Mason.
Both Mason squads have a few weeks off to prepare for the Mason Invitational on October 4th.
