Box Score
The George Mason women's soccer season opened the 2008 season on Saturday with a road match at the University of Maryland and the Terrapins took advantage of a man advantage by topping the Patriots, 5-0. Mason trailed 2-0 with 18 minutes to play when a red card left the Patriots at an 11-10 player disadvantage.
Mason started four freshmen as the Patriots looked to replace six departed starters from last year's team. The four freshmen were joined by one senior, one sophomore and five juniors. Senior Jessica Paris took two shots for Mason while sophomore Kimmy Moss had the one shot on goal. Freshman goalie Melissa Mailley made seven saves.
Maryland scored in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead as Lydia Hastings put in a rebound off an Annesia Faulker shot. The score started that way until the 63rd minute when Kalie Sciascia scored on a through ball played by Faulkner and Nataly Arias. After the red card, Ashley Grove, Hastings and Skyy Anderson put balls in the net. The final goal came with 5.4 seconds remaining in the match.
In total, 16 Mason players took the field and six of those were freshmen. The Patriots will return to action on Friday when Mason travels to UNC Greensboro for a 7 p.m. match.
