The George Mason baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday afternoon as the Patriots committed three errors and lost to Longwood, 7-6.
Scott Krieger was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run while Mark Hill was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Spencer Wiggins was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Longwood's first four hitters accounted for eight of their 10 hits as Paul Heidler II, Robbie Bailey, Jon Quigley and Justin Morriem combined to go 8 for 18 with three RBI and six runs.
The Lancers never trailed from the first batter. Heidler homered to right to lead off the game for the Lancers. Bailey followed with a bunt single, Quigley doubled and Morriem walked to load the bases. Bailey scored on catcher's interference and Quigley scored on a Nick vonGersdorff sacrifice fly.
Mason got a run back in the bottom of the first as Spencer Wiggins reached on a bunt single, went to third on a Scott Krieger single and scored on a double steal. But Longwood wasted no time once again making it a three-run game. This time, Topher Ellis reached on an error, went to second when Heidler was hit by a pitch and scored on a Bailey double.
Mason trimmed the lead in the third when Chris Henderson doubled with two outs and scored on a Krieger double. Longwood broke the game open in the fifth against reliever Kris Mengle. Heidler singled and scored when Mason third baseman threw Bailey's bunt into right field. Bailey went to third on the play and scored on Morriem's double. Morriem later scored on a Scott Kimble single to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, three straight singles to lead off the inning made it 7-3, as Krieger, Bour and Soares each reached base. Mark Hill followed with a double to make it 7-4 and Soares scored on Josh Steinberg's ground out. The Patriots pulled to within one when Brent Weiss grounded out, plating Hill.
Mason got the leadoff runner on in the first when pinch-hitter Aaron Tenney walked. After Ryan Uphouse sacrificed him to second, he went to third on Wiggins' ground out but he was caught at home trying to score on a ball that got away from the catcher.
Mason will be in action this weekend with a three-game home CAA series against Georgia State. The Patriots take on the Panthers at Noon on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
