The George Mason women's basketball team returns to Fairfax for its final home game in over a month, hosting Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. before embarking on a five game road trip. Fans can follow the action live from Patriot Center via Mason All-Access.
Mason is looking for its first victory of the season after falling at UMBC, 89-60, on Wednesday night. Senior Brittney Wilkins had a career night against the Retrievers, scoring 18 points to lead the Patriot offense. Sophomore Brittany Poindexter is Mason's top scorer through three games, averaging 13.7 points while also contributing 5.7 rebounds per contest.
Virginia Tech has won all three of its games this season, home victories over UNC Greensboro, Radford and N.C. Central, with an average margin of victory of 22 points. The Hokies have three players averaging double-digit scoring, led by Lakeisha Logan who is averaging 13.7 points per game.
Last time the two teams met, 17th-ranked Virginia Tech snapped a two-game losing streak in the all-time series as they recorded a 66-57 victory over Mason as part of the George Mason Shootout on Dec. 21, 1998. The teams combined for a total 50 fouls, 58 free throws, and 46 turnovers in the contest. Tere Williams had a game-high 17 points to lead the Hokies, who improved to 9-0 in the win, while Mason was led by 15 points off the bench from Tish Wescott as the Patriots fell to 3-5.
While Mason faces four Virginia schools each year in CAA play, last year began a rare trend by playing three non-CAA Virginia schools, which continues this season. Before the 2006-07 season, Mason had not played three non-conference opponents from the commonwealth since the 1990-91 season.
The Patriots have historically had difficulty against members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, amassing a 4-24 record against ACC schools. Mason's last ACC victory came on Nov. 30, 2005, a 68-61 victory at Miami.
Up next, Mason opens its five-game road trip with a trip to the Sunshine State to face Jacksonville University on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
