BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Brittney Wilkins eclipsed her career high with 18 points, but the George Mason women's basketball team was unable to record a victory as it fell to UMBC, 89-60, in non-conference action Wednesday evening at RAC Arena.
Mason fell to 0-3 following the loss while the Retrievers earned their first win of the year, improving to 1-1.
Wilkins was joined in double figure scoring by junior Rashauna Hobbs and sophomore Brittany Poindexter, who chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively. Carlee Cassidy and Michelle Kurowski led the Retrievers with 22 points apiece.
Mason had a strong opening to the game, scoring the first two buckets to take an early lead. That advantage held up until the 10:24 mark, when Brooks gave UMBC its first lead of the game at 11-10. Down 15-12, Hobbs drained a 3-pointer for the first deadlock of the game.
An 11-1 run by the Retrievers, though, moved the score in their favor. The UMBC lead grew as large as 12, including the halftime margin as the half came to a close with both teams combining for 25 fouls in the period.
UMBC held a 37.9-to-26.5 percent field goal shooting advantage in the first half while the Patriots led off the glass, 17-to-11. Both teams struggled with turnovers as well, with Mason turning the ball over 17 times to the Retrievers' 11.
Out of the break, the Retrievers continued to control the scoreboard, expanding their lead as large as 35 over the course of the second half.
The Patriots return home on Sunday for their final home game in over a month, hosting Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. before embarking on a five-game road trip.
