WILMINGTON, N.C. - After wrapping up the regular season as the third seed in the CAA Men's Soccer Championship, George Mason was rewarded for its efforts throughout the season with four student-athletes named to the 2008 All-CAA Men's Soccer Team and two freshman named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. The two teams, as well as the conference's major award winners, were announced Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals and finals of the CAA Men's Soccer Championship in Wilmington, N.C.
Senior forward Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe was George Mason's lone representative on the first team, becoming the Patriots' first member of the All-CAA First Team since Anthony Noreiga was selected to the squad following the 2005 season. Adjeman-Pamboe closed the regular season with two consecutive CAA Player of the Week awards after he scored four goals and tallied three assists in the final four matches, all Patriot wins. Adjeman-Pamboe added a goal and an assist in Mason's 5-0 rout of Hofstra in the opening round of the CAA Championship on Tuesday evening at George Mason Stadium. He leads the team in goals (6), assists (6) and points (18) this season and ranks in the top three in the CAA in points (18), points per game (0.95), assists (6) and assists per game (0.32).
A pair of Patriots were named Second-Team All-CAA. After earning a third-team selection in 2007, junior midfielder Richard Edgar moved up to the second team in 2008. The Mechanicsville, Md. native started all 19 matches this season, scoring a goal and adding an assist for three points. Edgar was also a key member of a defensive unit that ranked in the top four in the conference in both shutouts (8) and goals allowed (17). Edgar was joined on the second team by senior defender Jonathan Borrajo, who earned his first All-CAA selection in his final season on the team. Borrajo's leadership was invaluable to a defensive unit that has posted four shutouts in its past five matches. The Clifton, N.J. native also recorded two assists on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Kelley earned the second All-CAA selection of his career when he was named to the third team this year. He was a Second-Team All-CAA selection as a freshman in 2006, when the Patriots advanced to the CAA Championship match. In 17 starts in goal, the Lexington, Ky. native recorded a goals against average of 0.85 with 65 saves and eight shutouts. Kelley ranks second in the conference in goals against average (0.85) and shutouts (8), and third in save percentage (.812).
Both Ryan Gracia and Axel Levry were named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. Gracia, a midfielder from Rockville, Md., led all freshman on the team in points with 10 and goals with five. Levry, a forward from Ft. Washington, Md., scored two goals and added two assists during the 2008 season. Both of Levry's goals were game-winners.
Top seed UNC Wilmington nearly made it a clean sweep of the major conference awards, winning the CAA Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors. Junior forward Devan Carroll was named the conference's Player of the Year, sophomore defender Indy Smith was named the Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Aidan Heaney was named Coach of the Year.
