The George Mason women's soccer team held Drexel scoreless for more than 85 minutes on Friday evening and after allowing the Dragons a goal in the final four minutes, the Patriots rallied to tie Drexel and earn a 1-1 tie in Colonial Athletic Association action.
The Patriots (4-10-1, 1-5-1) allowed Jourdan Halasz to score her first collegiate goal with 4:01 to play in the match but just one minute and 10 seconds later, Kelly Keelan drilled a ball off her left foot from just inside the box into the far corner of the net to even the contest. The goal came off an assist from Kelly Thomas. For Keelan, it was her team-leading seventh goal of the season. For Thomas, it was her third assist, second on the team.
Melissa Mailley had the best performance of her career as she stopped eight of nine shots in 110 minutes in net. Halasz had two chances to score off corner kicks late in the first half but she was turned back first by a Mason defender and then by Mailley. Mason had a strong chance to score at the start of the second half by Thomas's shot was stopped by Kaitlin Bond.
"We continue to outplay the opponent in the run of play," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "We are working hard and I'm proud of our resiliency. We will just keep working and clawing for a result."
Mason outshot Drexel, 25-12 and the Patriots put 12 shots on goal. Drexel (5-9-1, 0-6-1) had a significant advantage in corner kicks with a 12-3 edge in that department. Bond finished with 11 saves.
The Patriots take the pitch on Sunday at Delaware at 1 p.m.
