The George Mason women's basketball team will look to continue moving up in the conference standings when it travels to UNC Wilmington for a Sunday matchup. The Seahawks have won the nine of the last ten meetings, but edged the Patriots by a total of three points in their two games last year. UNC Wilmington is looking for its second Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season on Sunday against Mason. The Seahawks are 10-7 and 1-5 in the conference, with the lone CAA win coming at Delaware, 58-50, on Jan. 17. UNCW's offense is led by Sahsha Taylor and reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Brittany Blackwell, as the two are averaging 13.6 and 13.3 points per game, respectively.
In Mason's last game, the Patriots put together an 18-1 scoring run to overtake William and Mary and held on for a 47-42 victory Thursday evening at Patriot Center. Mason improved to 8-9, 2-4 in the CAA, while the Tribe fell to 8-10 (2-4 CAA). Mason was led on offense by senior Lateisha Wade, who scored 12 points, including an 8-for-9 showing at the free throw line, while classmate Moni Akintunde pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. W&M saw two players score in double digits, with Kyra Kaylor and Kelly Heath chipping in 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Thursday night's win against William and Mary was one of the most noteworthy defensive efforts by a Patriot team. The 42 points and 25.0 percent field goal shooting allowed was a season-low, while Mason swiped 16 steals, the most since recording 18 takeaways against Hofstra on Feb. 1, 2004. Mason preserved its unblemished record when holding opponents under 60 points, as the Patriots are now 6-0 this season when accomplishing the feat.
