The George Mason cross country team ran their first race of the season today and finished fifth out of 15 teams at the Towson Invitational Cross Country Meet at Oregon Ridge Park. Mason scored 167 points edging out Adelphi by one point.
The Patriots were led by seniors Melissa Ferry and Alicia York who finished back-to-back respectively finishing 24th and 25th. Ferry crossed the finish line in 20:24.00 and York one second behind. Newcomer Samantha Fickel finished third for the green and gold and 33rd overall with a time of 20:51.00. Sophomore Candace Carter placed 51st (21:36.00) and senior Danielle Turner 70th (23:19.72) to finish the scoring for the Patriots.
Towson freshman Katie Ogden picked up the individual title Saturday morning when she finished first with a time of 18:47.00 to lead Towson to the women's team championship. Four Tigers finished in the top 10 and outdistanced Delaware 43 points to 50.
Also finishing the race, but not counting towards the team score for Mason were Amy Yokum (24:48.00), Katherine Griffith (24:53.00) and Jonecia Gates (27:14.00).
Mason will travel to the James Madison Invitational on September 15th for their next meet.
