Box Score

PITTSBURGH - Senior Jaqueline Kohler and sophomore Rebecca Walter each recorded a double-double to lead the Mason women's volleyball team past UAB on Saturday, 3-1 (30-25, 31-29, 17-30, 30-24) in both teams' final contest of the weekend. The Patriots (6-3) finished second in the weekend tournament, as the host Panthers claimed the tourney title.

Kohler and Walter were named to the All-Tournament Team for the second weekend in a row, following up last weekend's performance at the Brion's Grille Patriot Invitational with an equally outstanding two days in Pittsburgh. In Saturday's match, Walter led the Patriots with 17 kills, while Kohler chipped in 14. Defensively, Kohler's 14 digs provided her third double-double of the season while Walter added 10. The Blazers' attack was led by Ivana Bozic, who recorded 20 kills en route to being an All-Tournament team selection.

The opening game was an even contest throughout its first half, as Mason responded to an early 10-4 UAB lead by working its way back with a 9-3 run to tie the game. At 18 points apiece, the game was still tight but a Patriots' 7-3 run provided enough room for a game one victory.

Again, it was the Blazers who opened hot as they moved to a 14-6 lead in the second game. The Patriots slowly began working their way back into the game, finally knotting the score at 26. With the Patriots at game point, a service error tied the game at 29. However, Mason put away UAB with two points to seal the win.

UAB responded with a dominating 30-17 win in the third game, outhitting the Patriots by a .205 to -.026 margin. However, the Patriots regained the upper hand in the match by notching a 30-24 game four win to take the victory.

The Patriots are back in action next weekend, when they head south to Tampa for the University of South Florida Tournament. Mason will face UCF at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by matches against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 12 p.m. Saturday, and a tilt against the host Bulls at 5 p.m. later that day.
