The George Mason men's soccer team pushed its record to 2-1-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory over the Bowling Green Falcons on Friday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
Offensively, the Patriots put the Falcons' defense on its heels all afternoon, taking 18 shots to Bowling Green's 13, including an 11-3 difference in the second period of play. Sophomore Irvin Martinez, freshman Fro Adu and junior Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe all found the back of the net for Mason. Martinez and Adjeman-Pamboe's goals were the first of the season for both, while Adu, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, scored the third goal of his career in the contest.
On the defensive side of the field, George Mason held Bowling Green without a goal for 87:35. Minutes away from earning the team's second shutout in three matches, the Falcons' Matt Klancic scored Bowling Green's lone goal with 2:24 remaining to make the final tally 3-1. Mason's sophomore goalkeeper Sean Kelley played all 90 minutes and made five saves in the Patriots' victory.
Falcons' Head Coach Fred Thompson was honored in a ceremony at midfield prior to the start of the match. Now in his fourth season at Bowling Green, Thompson is a Patriot legend and a member of the George Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame. He was one of seven honorees inducted in the original class of 2006, joining Gordon Bradley, Martin Dunphy, Denis Hamlett, Eduardo Lima, Tamir Linhart and Mike Reynolds. Thompson played at Mason from 1982-85 and ranks fourth in school history in points (98) and fifth in goals (40).
George Mason hits the road for its next contest, traveling to nearby College Park, Md. to take on the sixth-ranked Maryland Terrapins on Sunday. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
