FAIRFAX, Va. -
The George Mason men's soccer team returns to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. match against the Bowling Green Falcons at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots enter the contest with a 1-1-0 record, while Bowling Green enters Friday's match with a 1-0-1 record this season.
The Patriots split a pair of matches at last weekend's Adidas D.C. College Cup at George Mason Stadium. Mason won its season opener, shutting out Howard 3-0 on Friday, before falling to American 2-1 on Sunday. Highly-touted freshman Fro Adu made his collegiate debut in the win over Howard, scoring two goals to lead the Patriots. For his efforts in the tournament, Adu was named to the 2007 Adidas D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team, along with teammate Richard Edgar, who also scored a goal in the victory over the Bison. Adu racked up another honor for his stellar debut when he earned the initial Colonial Athletic Association Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week award, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Bowling Green began its season last weekend with two road matches, a scoreless tie against Florida International in its season opener and a 2-1 win over Florida Atlantic on Sunday. Falcons' Head Coach Fred Thompson, now in his fourth season at Bowling Green, is a Patriot legend and a member of the George Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame. He was one of seven honorees inducted in the original class of 2006, joining Gordon Bradley, Martin Dunphy, Denis Hamlett, Eduardo Lima, Tamir Linhart and Mike Reynolds. Thompson played at Mason from 1982-85 and ranks fourth in school history in points (98) and fifth in goals (40).
Tickets to Friday afternoon's match will cost $5 for adults and $2 for youth and senior citizens. All full-time enrolled students at George Mason University will be admitted free with a valid Mason student ID. T-shirts and mini soccer balls will be thrown into the crowd throughout the game and if the Patriots score three goals, fans can bring their game ticket to Wing Zone immediately following the game or the next day to receive five free chicken wings with any purchase as part of the Wing Zone "Score for More" promotion.
