FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Jourdan Dozier set a new career high with 12 total blocks, one off the school single-match record, as the George Mason women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 30-19) victory over Towson in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday evening at Linn Gym.
Mason (8-7, 1-2 CAA) earned its first conference win of the season with an outstanding offensive performance in which the Patriots held a .240-to-.065 advantage in attack percentage. The Patriot offense was led by senior Jaqueline Kohler, who scored 20 points on 16 kills and a career-best eight blocks. Joining Kohler with double-figure kills was sophomore Rebecca Walter, who notched 12 on the evening. Dozier, with her 12-block performance, shattered the career mark she set just one day ago, with eight blocks against Delaware on Friday. Towson (4-15, 0-3) was led by Maddie Haseltine, who recorded 10 blocks.
The Patriots found themselves in an early hole, down 5-0 from the outset of the match. However, Mason took the lead at 9-8 after three straight kills by Walter and never trailed again in the game, though the Tigers tied the game at 24-24.
Towson began the second game in similarly impressive form, taking an early 6-3 advantage before the Patriots tied the game with three consecutive points. After trading points, Mason embarked on a 7-2 run to provide a comfortable lead at 14-9. Again, the Tigers could find no answer for Mason's attack, as the Patriots' lead grew as large as 10 points at 24-14 on the way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Mason's early fortunes reversed in the third game, as it was the Patriots who jumped out to an expansive lead at 10-2 to begin the game. Out-hitting the Tigers by a .333-to-.031 margin in the final game, Mason cruised to its first CAA victory by taking a 30-19 win in game three.
The Patriots, who played their final match at Linn Gym this season as the venue will undergo renovations, will head north for their next two matches. Mason will visit Hofstra on Friday at 7 p.m. before playing Northeastern at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
