FAIRFAX, Va. - After playing three consecutive road matches, the George Mason men's soccer team returned home to George Mason Stadium on Saturday evening to host the Saint Peter's Peacocks. Despite outshooting the Peacocks 15-12 in the match, the Patriots fell by a final score of 2-0 in front of a home crowd of 506 to drop to 3-3-1 on the season.

Saint Peter's extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches and improved its record to 7-2-0 on the season with the victory. The Peacocks scored both of their goals in the first half, one by senior forward Juan Gaviria in the 13th minute and the other by senior forward Murphy Wiredu in the 36th minute. Gaviria assisted on Wiredu's goal.

After being outshot 7-4 in the first half, Mason's offensive attack put the pressure on Saint Peter's after the intermission, finishing with six more shots in the half than the Peacocks. However, the Patriots were unable to find the back of the net, missing by the slimmest of margins on a number of attempts.

Sophomore forward Irvin Martinez took five shots in the match, with several of those coming within inches of finding the back of the net. Perhaps the Patriots' best scoring opportunity of the night came with 8:40 left in the match when senior Adam Lobene blasted a shot from about 10 yards out that hit the crossbar.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Kelley again played the entire match for Mason, ending the night with four saves. Junior goalkeeper Matthew Lawlor played all 90 minutes for Saint Peter's, tallying five saves in a winning effort.

The Patriots play again on Friday, Oct. 5 against UNC Wilmington in a 7 p.m. match at George Mason Stadium. Friday's match will be the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
